S. Korea’s President Casts Doubt on Meeting U.S. Trade Deal Deadline

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed uncertainty on Thursday about meeting the U.S. deadline of July 8 for finalizing a trade deal, particularly regarding the implementation of "reciprocal tariffs" set by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking at a press conference marking his 30th day in office, Lee acknowledged that tariff discussions were proving to be challenging. He stated that it was difficult to confirm whether the negotiations would be wrapped up by the July 8 deadline, despite his government's ongoing efforts.

"We are working hard, but it’s unclear if the deadline will be met," Lee said, adding that while both Seoul and Washington aim for mutually beneficial outcomes, the specifics of each side’s demands had not yet been fully resolved.

Describing the issue as delicate, Lee explained, "It’s a difficult subject to say, as what I say itself can affect the negotiations." However, he reassured that the government would continue pushing for a favorable resolution.

Turning to his broader foreign policy vision, Lee outlined a strategy focused on securing peace and safeguarding the well-being of the people. He emphasized that he "will protect peace and people’s lives through national interests-centered pragmatic diplomacy based on a firm South Korea-U.S. alliance, a close cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan, and a rapid improvement of relations with China and Russia."
