South Korea Joins Multinational Security Talks on Hormuz

(MENAFN) South Korea is set to take part in an international defense meeting focused on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, following a recent attack on a commercial vessel operated by a South Korean company, according to reports.

The virtual meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, will bring together defense officials from more than 40 countries and is being co-chaired by the United Kingdom and France. South Korea will be represented by Army Maj. Gen. Woo Kyung-suk, who serves as director general for policy planning at the Defense Ministry.

The talks come amid heightened concern over security in the strategically important waterway, which has experienced increased tensions and disruptions affecting global shipping and energy transport routes.

The decision to join the discussions follows an incident involving the cargo ship *HMM Namu*, which caught fire on May 4. South Korean authorities later concluded that the damage was likely caused by two unidentified airborne objects. No injuries were reported among the 24 crew members aboard, including six South Korean nationals.

Seoul has condemned the attack and said it will continue investigating the circumstances while preparing possible responses based on further findings.

South Korea’s National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac stated that attacks on civilian vessels are unacceptable and that appropriate measures will be considered once the investigation is complete.

The United States has suggested possible Iranian involvement in the incident, while Iranian officials have strongly denied any responsibility, rejecting the allegations outright.

The broader context of the meeting reflects growing international concern over maritime security risks in the region, particularly following recent geopolitical tensions that have affected shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.
